Mites are a common parasite found in your rodent's fur. Feeder rats can carry three types of the mite parasite: burrowing mites, bloodsucking mites and fur mites. Any of these types of parasites can be dangerous to your feeder rats, and may even transfer to the pets you are feeding. Bloodsucking mites are especially dangerous as humans can contract them as well. It is important that you eradicate the parasites right away to avoid a massive infestation or transferring them to your other pets.

Just leave it in after you spray. You can put the snake right back in too. It all should be the same and the nix cream is the same thing too.

Oh and when i spray the cage down do i wipe it out or just mist it with the lice/water mix and leave it to dry own its own? It is safe t put the snake back in the cage after spraying it down right? or does it need time to dry?

Ok well i just got back from the store and walmart had nix family pack but it was not a shampoo. It was a cream. I found rite brand shampoo and the walmart brand i was reading the ingredients and they seem the same. they are 2 oz bottles. It says under directions not to put in or near eyes but of corse thats not for reptiles. So I got the rite brand is it ok to use? I am guessing its the same stuff.

Its not necessarily from them being on the feeders, if you were close enough to his snake they could have hitched a ride on your clothes, the container the feeders were in, etc.

When u spray the snake u gotta be careful around the head though right? So u dont wash the shampoo off just let them keep it on them? Does it cause them to shed or anything?

No, with the Nix Lice shampoo you can spray it everywhere on the snake.  Even in the nostrils and around the mouth.  It does not harm the animal.

Here is why I say it's not feeders. Snake mites are species spefic parasites meaning that they do not feed on mice or rats only snakes. They can hitch a ride but the chances are not that great. It is more likely to come from you handling a reptile with mites or from a new reptile that has them. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they are not there. Also if you see one then there ar thousands and treating only cages doesn't work. You have to treat the whole room.

I do think its from the Feeders !!! I have a couple Red Tails too and they NEVER had a issue with Mites, but recently I had some on almost everyone of my snakes !! I buy from LLL Reptile and they do handle all reptiles and Feeders Every Day, so I think someone could of like brought in a reptile that had mites and the workers must of not noticed, placed the reptile in a tank, then went back to fetching feeders for people... I bet you anything this is whats happing.... but I have Treated all my snakes and now what I do is before feeding my snakes the feeders I but them 2-3days before and feed the feeders antiparasite pellets ^^ it seems to be working (no more problem) Hope that helps

That stuff is really not that effective. The best method I have found is to use nix lice shampoo. I mix the small bottle with one gallon of water. Spray the snake and cage. Only use paper as substrate while doing this. Take water out for a day or two so the snake doesn't wash the nix off. Do this every 2 weeks for 4 treatments and they should be gone. Every snake I bring in my house is also treated and quarantined for at least 2 months before even being close to my collection.

I treat each snake with natures recipe mite spray by its directions. I also clean there cage with bleach and water mix half and half. Then i clean that out with dawn. Then i spray the cage with the natures recipe.

I highly doubt it's the feeders but it's not impossible. It would help to know how you are treating them and what you are using. When treating mites you have to go through the life cycle and do multiple treatments every 2 weeks.

I hate these stupid sobs. I come home from a hard and hot day of work to find my 6ft albino kahl male has a few mites. There sobs are the worst thing i believe god ever created for people that own reptiles. They have to be getting them from the mice and rats I am feeding them. I know some people may disagree but thats the only thing i can think of because they had them about 4 months ago and I treated them and havent had any problems til now. I just fed my snakes last fri. They didnt have any then but now the one snake has them and he shares a cage with another snake so I know he will also have them. I am one of them people that my snakes are like my babys. I always handle them I check on all of them when I leave in the morning for work, when I get home from work, and before I go to bed.

ANY IDEAS FOLKS?????
